Reading historical fiction provides a means of learning historical facts through a form of entertainment. Novels such as Gone with the Wind and I, Claudius are well known, but what about all of the other excellent but lesser known historical novels? Frustrated from wading through book reviews on Amazon or sifting through Google hits, readers will get better results by taking advantage of the readers’ advisory tools librarians use to locate historical novels.
Databases and reader’s advisory websites facilitate the quest for a particular novel about a specific event or time period. For example, imagine a reader wants to find a historical novel written about a pioneer woman crossing to the western United States in a covered wagon. Where might this reader find a well-written, historically accurate novel with these attributes?
Online Database - WorldCat Genres
WorldCat is a catalog of books and other materials held by libraries worldwide. It has been around for a long time, but WorldCat Genre is a new, experimental feature. It enables users to search for titles within twelve genre categories.
In order to find a book about a pioneer woman heading west with a wagon train, the reader selects "Historical fiction," then clicks the category "Western stories." "Subjects" listed on the right-hand side of the screen list topics including "Wagon trains." Selecting this topic opens a page featuring 92 titles. This is a large number to look through, so to reduce that number to a manageable size, use the "Refine Your Search" options on the left sidebar. Select: Format "Book," Content "Fiction," Audience "Non-Juvenile," and Language "English." Results are reduced to a more relevant 72 titles.
An additional tip: Displayed at the top of the page is "su: Wagon trains su: Western stories." "Su" is the symbol for subject. Adding an additional "su" topic in the line will narrow the search even more.
A new search "su: Wagon trains su: Western stories su: Women pioneers" reduces the results to 13 western stories dealing with women pioneers on wagon trains. Clicking on each title provides a synopsis of the novel along with reviews (when available.)
Once a promising title is located, the user can select similar titles. For example, by using the novel Chalk's Woman by David Ballantine, it is possible to click on a listing in the "Related Subjects" area at the bottom of the page (Overland journeys to the Pacific or Women pioneers - West (U.S.) - Fiction) to find more titles. Another novel that fits all the search criteria is Raveled End of the Sky by Linda Sandifer (Overland journal to the Pacific - fiction and Women pioneers - West U.S.) - Fiction.)
