Raised for centuries in the mountains and valleys of the Swiss Alps, Berners were employed by farmers to protect the homestead, herd livestock and pull dairy wagons filled with milk jugs and cheese wheels. Today they are similarly employed as family pets, guarding the home, carrying backpacks for hikers and pulling wagons filled with firewood.
Intense, lively and eager to learn, Berners are frequent entrants in obedience competitions, carting and weight-pulling events, and agility trials. They regularly compete in breed standard shows. With their eye-catching appearance and regal stance, Bernese Mountain Dogs are a popular site in parades. They can be seen harnessed to festively decorated wagons proudly pulling small children.
