It was the 11th hole in the third round at the Barclays. Phil Mickelson, also known as "lefty", glides his feet in to place for a good golf stance. His club swings around, lifting the ball in to the air. The shot doesn't look good. Instead of heading straight, the ball veers to the left, cutting straight for the gallery. Golf fan Matt Reinhart has no idea of what is coming.

Fan Matt Reinhart

Matt Reinhart was watching the third round of the Barclays. Phil Mickelson was making his shot. It looked good, from Matt's point of view, at least when Mickelson first hit the ball. As Matt was laying on the ground watching the swing of the 2nd best golfer of the world, he realized the shot wasn't as good as he thought. The ball was heading straight for him. This couldn't be good. Smack!

We Hit The Ball Where It Lies?

This is, as everyone knows, one of the rules of pro golf. You hit the ball where it lies. But in this case, do you hit from the zipper of someone's pants? Matt lay on the ground, wanting to grab the ball from his pants zipper, but realized he couldn't touch the ball. It wasn't allowed. The crowd and golf officials around him were telling him this was the case.

Cameras zoomed in as he lay there, wondering what would happen next. There was a smile and some laughter from the stunned Reinhart, but everyone could see a little bit of nervousness in that laughter. Mickelson made his way over to the baffled, but still smiling, Reinhart.

The rules are that you must hit a ball where it lies, or take a "drop". The drop, of course, was the logical plan here. Mickelson lucked out though, as Reinhart's body was considered a "temporary part of the course", so he could take a drop for the shot, without having to add a point to the score card. The drop would not give him a penalty stroke because of the situation.

Phil Makes Good Gesture

When Phil arrived at the spot where Reinhart was "holding" his ball, he signed a glove that said, "Sorry", with a smiley face next to it. He apologized to Reinhart and removed his ball. Phil Mickelson's "signature" gloves are collectors items and can be sold if Reinhart would wish to do so. He looked more relieved to be able to come to a standing position again rather than worried about what he could do with the newly obtained glove.
