In my experiences working with children I have often heard parents say, “Our children grow up so fast.” This seems to be the case as infants don’t seem to stay small for long. Before we know it they are already sitting up and beginning to crawl.

Growth

The first thing we seem to notice about infants is their growth in weight. Infants need a certain amount of fat in their bodies in order to keep their body temperature normal as well as for proper brain development. In contrast to fat, muscle in infancy increases at a much slower rate.

There are two types growth development in children. The first is cephalocaudal growth. This type of growth means from head to toes. In infants, they grow more quickly at the head then the lower part of the body. The other type of growth trend is called proximodistal growth. This indicates growth in infants starts near the center of the body and works its way outwards. It’s important to know how infants grow so that we can best provide for their physical development.
