As with New Earth Mud, Chris Robinson and Paul Stacey worked together on This Magnificent Distance. But this album is vastly different from the first. It also bolts from the gate faster with “40 Days”, a real rocker. Again the lyrics are innovative. You can sense Robinson's need to rock here, and it wasn’t too long before the Black Crowes would be back together and out on the road. It’s a fantastic single and you can watch the live rendition of the song from the Late Show with David Letterman, here.

“Girl on the Mountain” is one of the best tracks on the album and one of the best songs Chris and Paul have written together. It's full of those dreamy guitars and keys that just take you away to some warm afternoon in the sun, lying in a field, dreaming about the love of your life. “She is a serious girl, her kiss tells you why. She spins the wheel that rolls back the sky. She tells the tales, that make the dust cry.” It is a haunting song of beauty with lyrics to match, about the girl you never forget throughout life. The guitar work is just incredible and blends with the soundscape to create a dreamy world of images and memories. At seven minutes long, it's only one of the epic songs on the album.

“Mother of Stone” is another hot single, and it will make any Black Crowes fan happy, being full of the kind of inferences and imagery Chris has made famous with his main act.
